Choose one conflict in The Hobbit, and explain how Tolkien uses it to move the story forward. Don't forget to cite page number when appropriate.

Have you ever been in a situation where your life is in danger, and your life depends on every little decision you make? Well, while Bilbo and his clan of dwarves were stuck out in the woods, they came along more trouble. Just after Bilbo and the dwarves luckily escaped the life threatening goblins, and the angry trolls, they trudged on, not knowing what lay ahead of them. As they were riding along, they heard the howl of wolves, and knew they had camped in the wrong place. Without having time to think, they scrambled up in the thickness of the trees. Of course, Bilbo was left behind! As quick as Dori could, he climbed down the tree, let Bilbo up the tree, and scuttled up the tree himself just in the nick of time! Now that everyone was safely up in the trees, they still needed an escape plan. They knew they couldn't stay up in the trees forever, while the wolves were screeching and howling! Bilbo and the dwarves had a decision to make. Right now, some people might just give up, but their decisions were very crucial in saving their own lives. At this point in the story, Bilbo, Gandalf, and the dwarves had traveled some of the most dangerous areas in the mountains, and they were not ready to give up! As quickly as he could, Gandalf thought of a magnificent plan! Being a wizard, (which can be very useful at times like this), started lobbing giant fire-lit pine cones down from the trees. This got the wolves furious! They started yelping and jumping high in the air, for they were terrified of fire! I really liked how they used one of the wolves' biggest fears to defeat them!

Once they had defeated most of the wolves, there were still many left, and still many coming. The travelers still needed to get down from the tree! Then all of a sudden, a group of swarming eagles came down from above swooping them up, taking them into saftey! You may wonder why the eagles did this very good dead. It was considered a thank you towards Gandalf for healing the great bird's wing. Once again, the crew was in saftey, but they all knew that what they had just gone through, wasn't going to be the hardest problem on their journey!

Good conflict! You did a wonderful job putting this into your own words. I can really hear your voice, and I love it! I love how you say: "scuttled up the tree just in the nick of time" and Being a wizard (which can be very useful at times like this) ! Ha! That is great! I think I might have you read this if you would. Good job! ~ Mrs. Best
